Shopkick Android App, Deals & Rewards Abound

Posted on Nov 29, 2011 in Shopping, Top Rated Apps | comment

The Shopkick Android app is the perfect shopping companion, offering location-based deals and rewards from many popular, large retailers.

  • Version: 2.3.2
  • Size: 5.74MB (apps2SD enabled)
  • Category: Shopping
  • Price: Free

Shopkick works by letting you earn reward points (“kicks”) that you can redeem for free gift cards, products, etc. In addition to these rewards, the app also presents you with new deals from some of the largest retailers. For example, based on my location (near San Francisco), walk-in kicks and deals were displayed for 24+ stores like Macy’s, Old Navy, Target, Best Buy, and Barnes & Noble. The list of stores is available in the “Nearby” tab.

Google Offers Android App, Redeem Top Deals

The Google Offers Android app connects you with great deals in your city, from restaurants to dance classes to a day at the spa.

  • Version: 1.0
  • Size: 1.38MB (no apps2SD)
  • Category: Shopping
  • Price: Free

Google Offers is Google’s response to the popular daily deal companies/apps like Groupon and LivingSocial. If you aren’t familiar with daily deals, they essentially allow you to purchase in-advance a service, coupon, or voucher for a fraction of the normal price. For example, a couple of the deals listed in this Android app for the San Francisco area include “$10 for $25 worth of food and drink at Ra Lounge” and “$50 for $100 toward custom design and printing services at AlphaGraphics.”

Shop Shoes & Clothes w/ the Zappos Android App

Posted on May 30, 2011 in Shopping, Top Rated Apps | comment

Search, browse, read reviews, and buy quality shoes, clothes, and more with the Zappos Android app.

  • Version: 1.0.2
  • Size: 1.62MB (apps2SD enabled)
  • Category: Shopping
  • Price: Free

First things first, this app has one of the most polished, easy-to-use interfaces we’ve used on Android, across all different app categories. Of course, this aligns perfectly with Zappos.com’s mission of offering best-in-class customer service and user experience.

The app’s homepage features icons for almost any action you’re likely to want to take: search, browse, find brands, view favorites, open your shopping cart, or access your Zappos.com account. Additionally, you’ll notice that there is a 24/7 customer service phone # here as well that connects you to a customer support team dedicated to mobile device users.

The Browse icon takes you to item categories including shoes, clothing, bags, beauty, housewares, and what’s new. Upon downloading this app, I was surprised that it offered more items than just shoes (as this is all I associated with Zappos at first). If you aren’t familiar with Zappos either, their catalogue is huge! If you’re looking for something particular, try the Brands or Search icons on the homepage.

The product pages themselves have been optimized so you can customize the item to your needs without leaving the page. For things like clothing, this includes color, size, and width. From there you can share the item, add it to your favorites (which requires a Zappos.com account), or add it to your cart. Before deciding on whether or not to buy, make sure to check out the product details and user reviews.

Pros:

  • One of the best app interfaces on Android
  • Streamlined mobile shopping experience from an industry leader
  • Dedicated mobile customer service team available 24/7

Areas for improvement:

  • Support for landscape mode is a must, especially for Android tablets

Conclusion: Shopping for shoes, clothing, etc. on your Android device just got a whole lot easier thanks to the Zappos Android app.

Top Android App: SavingStar Grocery eCoupons

Posted on May 2, 2011 in Shopping, Top Rated Apps | comment

SavingStar Grocery eCoupons is the paperless way to save money on your groceries.

  • Version: 1.1
  • Size: 229KB (no apps2SD)
  • Category: Shopping
  • Price: Free

The SavingStar Android app lets you browse e-coupons redeemable at supermarkets and drugstores across the U.S. from some of the most popular brands. The way it works is extremely simple. To start, you’ll need to register with your email address. Then, you’ll have to enter a rewards/loyalty card to be associated with your account.

Save with these three easy steps: 1) As you scroll through the list of e-coupons and select the ones you’re likely to use, they will automatically be linked to your loyalty card. 2) Shop at your local grocery store and use your loyalty card when you check-out. However, your final total will not change at the store but the coupon’s value will be added to your SavingStar account. 3) Once you’ve accrued over $5.00 in your SavingStar account, you can initiate a cash deposit into your bank/PayPal account, request an Amazon gift card, or give a donation to the American Forests charity.

The list of participating retailers is constantly growing, as are the companies issuing the coupons. While many of the offered coupons are from popular brands (e.g. Heinz, Purina, and Nestle), the list is not as expansive as you’d hope. Since this app is relatively new, I’d expect the number of e-coupons (and overall usefulness) will increase dramatically in the near future.

Pros:

  • Save money on your next trip to the grocery/drug store
  • E-coupons linked to store reward/loyalty cards
  • Sort e-coupons by value, category, expiration date, and brand name
  • No cutting and clipping coupon inserts from the Sunday paper

Areas for improvement:

  • Increase participation of nationwide retailers and companies that issue the coupons

Conclusion: A very easy-to-use Android app that will save you money on your next grocery shopping trip.

Top Android App: Newegg Mobile

Posted on Jan 15, 2011 in Shopping, Top Rated Apps | 1 comment

Newegg Mobile lets you search, shop, read reviews, and make purchases through Newegg.com.

  • Version: 1.0.2
  • Size: 0.99MB (no apps2SD)
  • Category: Shopping
  • Price: Free

I think it’s fair to assume that many of us know about Newegg and the fantastic deals they offer on electronics, computer components, etc. As you’d expect, the Newegg Android app features detailed specifications and over 1.7+ million customer reviews for an endless list of products.

You can quickly browse all items by specific categories like computer hardware, cell phones, and gaming. Or, if you already have something in mind, search with text or voice input. Better yet, if you’d like to see whether Newegg offers a lower price than a store you’re currently in, scan the barcode for instant results.

A truly exciting feature of the Newegg app is the support of gestures. It seems like many Android apps neglect the functionality of gestures and the ease and efficiency they can provide. For example, on product information pages, gesturing a “C” adds the item to cart, a “W” the wishlist, or a “S” to share it with family/friends.

Pros:

  • Main-page access to frequently updated deals like “Shell Shocker” and “Daily Deals”
  • Gesture support streamlines shopping experience
  • All purchases are processed through Newegg’s secure servers
  • Product details, images, reviews, etc.

Areas for improvement:

  • Needs to support apps2SD
  • Product images need to be much higher resolution

Conclusion: The Newegg consumer electronics Android app has harnessed the power of Android to enhance the mobile shopping experience.
