Posted on Feb 21, 2011 in Entertainment, Top Rated Apps | 1 comment

The Team Coco Android app lets you take the show on the road with you.

  • Version: 1.1.0
  • Size: 852KB (no apps2SD)
  • Category: Entertainment
  • Price: Free

Team Coco brings a ton of Conan O’Brien’s latest content, just in case you missed the last show or didn’t get enough. In the “videos” tab, you can find everything from monologues, to behind the scenes action, to sneak peaks of future guests/content. Additionally, browse through all of the latest photos in the similarly-named tab. If you’re interested in finding out the guest lineups for upcoming shows (or when they will air), checkout the “schedule” tab.

Overall, this Android app is incredibly well designed and highly functional. The home tab links directly to the latest content, displays the latest tweets, and more. All of the material is embedded within the app itself, so you’re not being taken to the browser or following links to YouTube. A lot of other similar Android apps would benefit from modeling after this app’s interface.

Pros:

  • Get your Conan fix on the go
  • Videos, photos, tweets, etc.!
  • Seamless user interface really accentuates the content

Areas for Improvement:

  • Upgrade the share feature (for videos especially) to link with all Android share options like installed Twitter apps

Conclusion: If you’re a Conan fan or are just looking for a good laugh, this Android app is for you.

  • Version: 1.0
  • Size: 1.45MB (no apps2SD)
  • Category: Entertainment

Just as you would create your very own “Mii” to play on your Nintendo Wii, Google has just released their own rendition, Androidify. You can personalize your own Android with various outfits, shoes, hair, hats, and other accessories. Even stretch or shrink the arms, legs, body, and head as you see fit.

Once you have completed your personalizations, save and share it via gmail, SMS, Twitter, or Picasa. You can see all of your creations in the “My Androids” section in the menu.

A worthy update would be the ability to customize the background, since the only option is plain white at the moment.

ESRB Video Game Rating Android App

Posted on Dec 30, 2010 in Entertainment, Top Rated Apps | comment

ESRB Rating Search Android app gives you detailed access to video game ratings.

  • Version: 1.1
  • Size: 381KB
  • Category: Entertainment
  • Price: Free

Are you a parent with kids who enjoy a variety of video games? Are you looking to find a suitable game that fits their age/interests? Luckily, this Android app lets you read up on video game rating summaries which provide detailed descriptions of a game’s content. The detailed summaries are a great decision-making tool, especially since general ratings (e.g. Everyone, Teen, Mature etc.) don’t always seem to apply. ESRB supports all of the large gaming platforms including Nintendo, PlayStation, Windows PC, and Xbox.

You can instantly receive video game ratings in two ways, with a photo of the game (convenient when in a store) or by entering the title in the search field.

Each game has an official rating (EC, E, E10+, T, M, AO), brief reasoning, and the rating summary. Note: rating summaries are provided only for games that were assigned ratings after July 1, 2008 and are specific to the game itself. You can easily share these ratings via Gmail, SMS, or Twitter if you’d like to get a second opinion (like from your significant other of course!).

Pros:

  • Detailed ESRB video game ratings
  • Make informed decisions based on game content appropriateness
  • Search by text or photo
  • Descriptive “About” section describes the ESRB and its ratings

Areas for improvement:

  • User-interface could use some beautification
  • Video game screenshots would add another medium for determining suitability
  • Ability to browse game titles by ratings and summary keywords would help with finding the right game

Conclusion: An extremely useful app for anyone (especially parents) who are shopping for an age/content appropriate video game.

Top Android App: 2Player Network Music Player

Posted on Nov 21, 2010 in Entertainment, Top Rated Apps | 1 comment

2Player is an Android music player for Windows home networks.

  • Version: 0.83 Beta
  • Size: 1.51MB
  • Category: Multimedia
  • Price: Free (License to support developer ~$2.94)

First off, 2Player is extremely easy to use and requires almost no upfront setup (no software download required, like that for Gmote). The app enables you to play music, a podcast, or other media file on any networked device (DLNA/UPnP supported) around you (e.g. laptop, Xbox360, Playstation 3, DLNA enabled HDTVs). Even better, you also have the ability to play from those devices as well.

A very descriptive example of 2Player’s versatility was provided straight from the developer. “Imagine the following sorts of scenarios. You come home from work; you’re listening to an interesting podcast on your car stereo, played from phone via bluetooth. As you walk in the door, 2player detects your Wi-Fi network, and continues where you left off, playing on your stereo system, connected to your TV. Later on, you put on a little jazz (served up by Windows 7 from your iTunes music collection), and transfer that (using your phone) onto the WD TV Live plus device in your dining room. Music everywhere; with your phone at the center of it all acting as remote control and traffic director, and serving or playing as required.”

2Player is most compatible with Windows 7, which runs Windows Media Player 12 (Windows XP only supports WMP 11). If you’re having any issues, make sure that you have enabled “play to” and “play from” on the media devices you intend to use. If you’re running Windows XP (like me), you’ll have to use non-Windows media servers like XBMC or Twonky.

2Player only supports audio files (no video). This actually proves beneficial in that it allows for an optimized user interface and overall functionality. If you enjoy this app, consider paying for the License which supports the hardworking developer!

Pros:

  • “Play to” and “play from” support for all networked media devices that support DLNA and UPnP
  • Simple, streamlined user interface
  • Support forums and a very dedicated developer

Areas for improvement:

  • Support for use with a 3G connection.

Conclusion: A robust, efficient solution to control music/audio across multiple networked media devices!

  • Size: 2.50MB
  • Category: Multimedia
  • Price: Free (trial)

PowerAMP Music Player supports mp3, mp4, m4a, flac, ogg, wav, tta, wma, ape, and wv file types. When you first download the app, you can choose which SD card folders you’d like to import into PowerAMP. The default Android media folder is automatically checked, but if you have other song files stored make sure to check the appropriate folder.

First off, you’re sure to be blown away by the incredibly sleek and sexy user-interface. The speed and responsiveness of the app is very impressive as well. On the main media player page, you’ll see the standard album artwork, control buttons (play, fwd, rwd), as well as options to shuffle or repeat songs.

The unique feature with this music player app is the 10 band graphic equalizer. You can play around with the settings yourself or use the preset settings to enhance formats like dance, rock, and techno. There are even dedicated dials for bass, treble, and volume. If you make adjustments that you don’t like, just hit the reset button to start over fresh.

Another welcomed feature is the ability to add the PowerAMP widget, not only to the homescreen, but to the lockscreen as well! Now you can have full control of your music without having to unlock your phone.

Note: as of this review date, only the trial version is available for download. The full, paid version is scheduled to be released in the near future.

Pros:

  • Supports a wide range of audio formats, e.g. mp3, mp4, m4a
  • Optimized 10 band graphic equalizer with optional preset formats
  • SD card folders and system library support
  • Tag editor, homescreen widgets, and lock screen access!

Areas for improvement:

  • Navigation could be improved/more intuitive

Conclusion: Hands down the best Android music player app available!
