DeskSMS Android App, Text via Gmail, Gtalk, Browser

Posted on Oct 2, 2011 in Communication, Top Rated Apps | comment

The DeskSMS Android app allows you to send text messages from your phone number through Gmail, Gtalk, or an internet browser.

  • Version: 1.1.0.1
  • Size: 670KB (apps2SD enabled)
  • Category: Communication
  • Price: Free ($4.99/year license after trial)

DeskSMS works by forwarding your text and MMS messages to your Gmail, Google Chat, and/or DeskSMS Chrome extension platforms. Then, when you reply back via any of these methods the recipient will receive the message from your mobile number, as if you replied directly from your Android phone. This would prove especially useful if you work at a computer all day without much access to your phone, since you can now send/receive messages from friends/family via the computer (and they won’t think you’re ignoring them anymore).

Top Android App: TiKL – Touch To Talk

Posted on Apr 22, 2011 in Communication, Top Rated Apps | comment

TiKL – Touch To Talk turns your Android phone into an instant walkie-talkie.

  • Version: 1.27
  • Size: 888KB (no apps2SD)
  • Category: Communication
  • Price: Free

TiKL – Touch To Talk lets you instantly talk or text to one or more people with the single push of a button. To get started, you’ll need to make sure that your friends/family also have TiKL installed on their Android phones (or iOS powered devices like iPhones, iPads, and iPod Touches). Next, add them to your list of selected favorites by finding them in your existing contacts list. However, in order to talk with non-Android phone devices, you’ll have to setup those contacts through Facebook integration (requires that you login/enable Facebook from within TiKL).

On the app’s homescreen, the drop down menu contains your favorite contacts and is where you choose who you want to talk to. Similarly, the “Call Info” button gives you details on whoever you are currently talking to. As for the app’s actual functionality, it really is quite simple (especially thanks to the giant talk-icon button). Once you hear the doorbell sound and have accepted the 2-way connection, you’re ready to go. To talk, press and hold the talk-icon button. Releasing the button gives a short beep and opens the line for the other person to speak.

Pros:

  • Instant 2-way communication with the push of a button
  • Create groups of multiple contacts to talk to all at once
  • Facebook integration lets you add iOS device users
  • It’s free!

Areas for improvement:

  • User interface is functional but could use a major facelift

Conclusion: With over 10,000,000 users, this is the best Android app for walkie-talkie style, touch-to-talk communication.
