The Merriam-Webster Dictionary App is a comprehensive tool for reference, education, and vocabulary building.

- Category: Reference
- Price: Free
Like the Dictionary.com Android app that came before it, the Merriam-Webster Android app features an easy way to lookup words on the go. The app’s homescreen displays a large search box and even an option to voice search an unknown word. Depending on the word you’re looking up, the voice search functionality may or may not return exact results (it’s based on Android’s current voice search functionality).
Search results display the word’s definition, part of speech, and supplementary details like synonyms, origin, and usage examples. Tap the red speaker button alongside the word to hear the official pronunciation.
A nice feature that’s been built into this app is the full-screen option (reader view), available via the corner-pointing arrows icon. In landscape mode, the search bar, bottom menu, and ads take up more than half of the screen. Activating full-screen lets you hide the search bar and bottom menu for easier reading and scrolling. In terms of usability, it might be best for the developers to remove the bottom menu and make it accessible by pressing the Menu button.
In addition to the dictionary, the bottom menu also contains options to view your recently searched words (great for reviewing those more challenging definitions) and the “daily word” (perfect for expanding your vocabulary).
- Offline dictionary means no internet access necessary
- Potential words auto-update in the list as you type to search
- Voice pronunciations
- Full-screen option (reader view)
Areas for improvement:
- To improve app usability, remove the bottom menu and make it available by pressing Menu.
Conclusion: Definitions and language information delivered via an offline Android app from one of the most well-known and respected dictionaries.
