GroupMe Android App: Group Texting, Calling & More

The GroupMe Android App lets you group text, conference call, and communicate with ease.

  • Version: 2.1.9.1
  • Size: 1.68MB (no apps2SD)
  • Category: Social
  • Price: Free

To begin, use the “+” button in the top right corner to create a group of people you’d like to chat with. You can add up to 25 group members from your contacts list or Facebook and Twitter accounts. Then, add a group name (optional) and decide whether or not you’d like the group to be joinable. Joinable groups are visible to friends and contacts who can request to join. This option is best used if you’re creating a group for a concert, sporting event, or any other discussion with a potentially large number of members. For more private conversations, keep this option unchecked.

The GroupMe Android app works by creating a unique phone number for any group that has been created. So when a text message is sent to the group number, it is automatically sent to every group member. The sender’s name is put next to each message so it looks and acts like a real-time chat room. Similarly, you can even choose to instantly start a conference call.

All of these features will work for anyone with a mobile phone, whether or not they have the GroupMe Android app installed. Users without the app can make use of Group Commands to manage a group, e.g. start a group or add/remove a member with specific #hashtag or [bracketed] commands.

Note: The Android app lets you select which chat experience you prefer 1) In-App Chat (fastest option, uses data connection) or 2) SMS Messages (slower, standard text message rates apply) depending on your needs and mobile plan.

Pros:

  • Free group messaging, inline picture sharing
  • Instant conference calling capabilities
  • Works over data connection or with SMS messages
  • Share and view member locations on the map

Areas for improvement:

  • Option to send messages to a group (e.g. an announcement) and have replies come back only to the original sender
  • Increase group size limits for larger collaborations

Conclusion: A powerful, reply-all style messaging & conference calling Android app for efficient communication between groups of your friends, family, classmates, coworkers, etc.
