Top Android App: mTrip Travel Guides

mTrip for Android is like having a personal tour guide in your pocket!

  • Version: 1.0.2
  • Size: ~10-20MB
  • Category: Travel
  • Price: $5.99

mTrip travel guides are designed to give you the most personalized vacation possible. To start, you’ll want to enter your trip details including the dates you’ll be there and your accommodations (hotel, inn, etc.). Then, use mTrip’s genius algorithm to “calculate” an entire itinerary based on your interest in attractions like museums, sightseeing, parks, and religious locations. You can also adjust the “intensity” of your visit and choose whether you prefer top attractions or alternative sights. Using this information, your customized travel itinerary is created.

Each attraction page features all of the details you’d like to know before visiting like location, reviews, hours, pricing, contact information, and more. Conveniently, you can quickly access walking directions from your current location without leaving the Android app or needing an internet connection.

If you’d like to explore places not included in your itinerary, open the Guide tab. There you can browse and search attractions, restaurants, hotels, shopping, bars/nightlife, etc. by popularity, location, or keyword. Furthermore, use the Navigation tab to view an interactive map with all key attractions pinned.

Currently there are over 20 city guides which include places like Berlin, Dublin, London, Paris, New York, Shanghai, and Tokyo. Each guide is offered as it’s own independent Android app.

Pros:

  • Automated, personalized trip planning
  • Offline maps navigation and augmented reality browsing
  • Extensive attraction database with user reviews and important details
  • No worry of roaming fees

Areas for improvement:

  • Ability to check-off places visited would be both a functional and fun feature
  • Reset itinerary was hard to find (More tab > Settings)

Conclusion: mTrip offers some of the richest travel information around, all customized with your preferences.

Note: Search the Android Market for specific location guides.

  1. I downloaded the Tokyo guide and was very disappointed in both content and execution.

The search and augmented reality features seem to be broken. The Tokyo subway map is years out of date. Regular maps aren’t detailed enough to actually use. Restaurant reviews seem to be computer-generated (“The restaurant spoils diners with xxx cuisine” appears in many, often incorrectly), and many venues are no longer in business.

Unfortunately it took about 20 minutes to download the maps over wireless (and you can’t begin to use it until they’re downloaded for some reason), so it was impossible to return within Google’s 15-minute time limit.
