Top Android App: Gmote 2.0
Gmote 2.0 is the Android app that turns your phone into a remote control for your computer. It also allows you the functionality to stream music from your computer onto your phone. Gmote 2.0 uses your network to connect your phone and your computer. Both devices must be on the same network for this app to function. This app was made to impress!

When you initially open Gmote, you will be shown the screen below. Tap the screen and an email draft will open with the details of the server you need to download onto your computer in order to user Gmote 2.0. Once this is completed, click “I have installed the Server. Start Gmote!” to begin the setup on the phone. You must have WiFi enabled and you must connect to the same network that your computer is currently connected to.
Once this is completed, you will be all ready to use the app. You will be taken to a screen that looks like a very simple remote. From here lies all the functionality of the app.
Click menu > browse to see a list of all the files on your computer that you can access with Gmote. Selecting a music file will cause it to play on your computer. If their is album artwork associated with it, it will be shown as the background to your remote. Very cool feature. To skip a song, hold the ‘skip’ button for 2 seconds.
You can also access entire PDF files as well as PowerPoint files. Click the ‘play’ button to launch the slideshow. Use the ‘skip’ button to go to the next page or next slide. To close the presentation, click the power button located in the upper right hand corner of the remote.
A very incredible feature of this app is the touchpad option, which can be found at menu > touchpad. This turns your phone into a touchpad which controls the pointed on your computer. Control your cursor with your finger, click by tapping the screen, right click by long pressing on your screen, and open the keyboard with the keyboard icon at the top left. Now if you need to control your computer from a distance you have the capability! If anything, this feature is really neat to show your family and friends the power of Android.
In the menu, there is also the Web (beta) feature which allows you to directly open certain websites on your computer using your phone. For quick access and navigation of YouTube, Hulu, TED, etc. this is a very original feature. Real awesome functionality.
Lastly, what I think of is one of the coolest features, is the fact you can stream music files from your computer onto your phone. Want to listen to all the music on your computer’s hard drive from your phone? Gmote 2.0 let’s you do this with ease. There is a disclaimer that this functionality is in beta, however I haven’t had any problems with it yet.
Gmote 2.0 is one of those truly innovative apps that really makes you say “wow!” with your Android phone. With all the features and functionality, you’ll definitely find plenty of uses for this app.
